Unplug and Unwind
Let’s face it — we’re all a little too plugged in these days. Between endless emails, nonstop notifications and the scroll that never ends, it’s easy to forget what it feels like to just be. That’s where Houma comes in.
Down here in Louisiana’s Bayou Country, life moves a little slower. It’s the kind of place where nature takes the lead, people still wave from their porches, and you can actually hear yourself think. If you’re ready to take a breather and get back to basics, here are a few places around Houma and Terrebonne Parish that are perfect for pressing pause.
Mandalay National Wildlife Refuge

If your idea of peace and quiet involves birdsong, rustling marsh grass, and maybe the occasional gator sighting, Mandalay is your spot. Just outside Houma, this wildlife refuge is pure bayou beauty — wide open wetlands, raised boardwalk trails, and plenty of space to just… breathe. Bring some binoculars if you’re into birdwatching, or just wander and let the quiet sink in. No screens necessary.
Pro Tip: Pack a snack, leave your phone in the car, and just sit by the water for a while. It’s kind of magical.
Bayou Terrebonne Waterlife Museum

Okay, so it’s indoors — but hear us out. This waterfront museum is a gem. It’s calm, quiet and full of cool stories about the people, boats and bayous that shaped this area. No flashing screens or loud crowds, just a peaceful space to take in a little local culture. You’ll learn something, sure — but more than that, it’s just a great spot to slow down and get grounded in the place you’re exploring.
Pro Tip: Pair your visit with a walk along the bayou trail outside. No headphones, just nature.
Downtown Jeaux Café

Sometimes all you need for a proper digital break is a comfy seat, a great cup of coffee, and a place that feels cozy. Downtown Jeaux hits the mark. Tucked into the heart of Houma, this little café has a chill vibe that makes it easy to unwind. Bring a journal, a book or just people-watch for a bit. The Wi-Fi’s there if you really need it — but we suggest you don’t.
Pro Tip: Try the local roast and grab a seat by the window. Bonus points if you leave your phone face-down.
Chauvin Sculpture Garden

Now this place is something else. A bit off the beaten path, the Chauvin Sculpture Garden is full of wild, wonderful and kind of mysterious sculptures created by a man named Kenny Hill. There are over 100 pieces, all telling a story without words — and the bayou backdrop makes it even more surreal. It’s quiet, it’s weird in the best way, and it’s one of those places that just sticks with you. No need for captions — just be there.
Pro Tip: Take your time. Some of the details in the sculptures are easy to miss if you’re rushing (or distracted by your phone).
A good digital detox doesn’t have to be complicated. Let folks know you’re taking a break. Turn on that out-of-office reply or post a quick “be back later.” But most importantly, pay attention.. to the breeze, the birds, the flavors, the people. It’s all better when you’re actually in the moment. So, pack light, power down and give yourself permission to disconnect for a while. You’ll be glad you did.
