The Houma Area Opens New Visitors Center
The Houma Area Convention and Visitors Bureau (HACVB) will officially open its new interpretive visitors center on July 9th with a community-wide celebration of Terrebonne Parish.
In collaboration with Duplantis Design Group, the HACVB developed a plan for a new 3700 square foot, glass and steel building. While maintaining the current visitors center as administrative offices, the new center allows more space for travelers as well as opportunities for the HACVB to grow. The modern design of the new visitors center contrasts the traditional design of the current building and represents a progression from the slow moving bayous of Terrebonne Parish to a modern, industrial Houma area.
The interior of the new visitors center will offer its guests a taste of Terrebonne Parish with interactive exhibits and video content. The HACVB staff worked with former National Parks exhibit designers to create engaging displays on local cultures, history, industry and environments. Local photographer Matthew Noel contributed new images as well as drone video to explain unique features of our area, such as the difference between swamps, marshes, bayous and canals. A large map of Terrebonne Parish will impress upon visitors the amount of land and water that surrounds them and the importance of coastal conservation and restoration efforts. The goal of the visitors center will be to encourage visitors to spend more time visiting and engaging with Terrebonne Parish.
The HACVB invites everyone to celebrate the grand opening of the new visitors center on July 9th from 11:00 AM – 4:00 PM at 114 Tourist Drive Gray, LA. The celebration will include over 30 arts, crafts and merchandise vendors from Terrebonne Parish, showcasing the talents of our local people. A jambalaya cook off will take place with categories such as Best Meat Jambalaya, Best Seafood Jambalaya and Best Nontraditional Jambalaya. Children’s Activities from Terrebonne Parish Libraries and Kids In Motion Playhouse Discovery Museum will be on hand for family fun. Live music from The Cajun Music Preservation Society will highlight the area’s Cajun heritage and prizes from local businesses and festivals will be given away during the event.
