5 Tips for Bringing Your Family to Mardi Gras

Mardi Gras is right around the corner. This season has received a reputation for wild parties and crowded streets, but you can have a family-friendly Mardi Gras. Here in Houma, we have 5 Tips for you to have your whole family “laissez-les bon temps rouler” or let the good times roll.

Be Safe: If you venture to smaller cities such as Houma, Louisiana, you will find that the crowds are much more manageable. Although everyone is having a good time, the hospitality of this Cajun community prevails. With safety in mind, always remember to be aware of your surroundings. It’s easy to focus on the float in front of you, but keep an eye out for the upcoming and passing floats as well to be sure you aren’t surprised by flying beads.

Be Early: Everyone is excited to get the festivities started. It’s a good idea to arrive at the parade route at least an hour before the parade’s start time to find a good spot for your family.

Be Energetic: Before going out to the parade, be sure to get some rest. You will want all the energy you can muster to get the most out of this celebration. When the parade begins, don’t just be a bystander. Get right in and enjoy! Dance with the marching bands! Get up and jump, wave and scream for beads!

Be Prepared: You and your family will want to spend some time on the parade route. It’s a good idea to bring snacks and drinks with you. All Houma area grocery stores will carry our favorite snack, king cake, as well as a variety of healthy options to bring along. You’ll also want to prepare for all possible weather conditions, as parades often roll rain or shine. Check the forecast before making your way to the parade route and be sure to bring a jacket and/or blanket.

Be Sure to Bring a Big Bag: The Houma area parades are known for being generous. You’ll want to bring something with you to carry all of your specialty beads, stuffed animals, toys and doubloons back home.
